Irish baby names are popular all over the world over, not just here in Ireland. There’s something special and unique about them, from the way they’re written and sound to the history behind them.

If you’re looking for an Irish baby name or something a little unique, our baby name generator can help you find one that you’ll truly love.

How to Pick a baby name

There are so many baby names to choose from, and it’s easy to be spoilt for choice.  When it comes to picking a baby name, there are a few things worth considering before you make your final decision.

Think about your baby’s surname and whether they’ll have a middle name. Do they all work when you put them together? And remember, it’s not just how they sound. Make sure that you consider what your baby’s initials would be so that you can avoid any embarrassing initials.

It’s also important to consider whether the baby names you shortlist are future-proof. Will your cute baby girl name still work as well when she’s grown up, and will your unique baby boy names still sound as good when they’re heading to secondary school?

Some other things to bear in mind are

      • Spellings. One day your baby will learn how to say and write their name. Bear in mind that the longer the name and the more non-traditional the spelling, the harder it may be for them, not to mention everyone else, to get it right.
      • If you’re choosing a long name, is it likely to be shortened at some point down the line? For example, Sebastian can be shortened to Seb and Olivia to Liv. Make sure you’d be happy with the potential ‘nicknames’.
      • Do you want something unique? Or are you OK with a name that’s more popular and well-known?

At the end of the day, the name you give to your baby is entirely up to you. Don’t feel pressured into sharing the baby names you’re considering with others, particularly if you think that they’re likely to influence your decision. The choice is yours.

How long do you have to name a baby?

Following the birth of your baby, you should wait three weeks before booking an appointment to register the birth. Your baby’s birth must be registered within 12 months. After this point, you’ll need to telephone the civil registration service for advice1. This gives you plenty of time to find the perfect baby name, so you don’t need to rush.

Naming a baby is easier for some than others, and there’s no hard and fast rule here. You might have had your children’s names picked out since you were a child. Perhaps you’ve always intended to name your baby after a close relative, or maybe the perfect name will pop into your head the moment you see your little one's face.

On the other hand, you may find yourself struggling to find any baby names you like or that you and your partner agree on. It’s also not unusual to have your heart set on a particular name but then change your mind once your baby is born. If that’s the case, try our baby name generator to help you find the perfect baby name.
