More information about halal

How do we identify products as halal?

At Cow & Gate, we respect the cultural and religious practices of all our parents and their children.

That’s why we’ll only describe our products as halal if they have been given a halal certificate from an Islamic halal authorisation body.  There’s more about this process below.

How do we get halal approval?

We’ve put a lot of care and attention into selecting the certification bodies that certify our baby products as halal. We’ve looked at and considered their reputation within the UK Muslim community, as well as their international reach.

For a product to be halal approved, it must follow Islamic dietary guidelines. The two main conditions for our products to be certified as halal under the guidelines are that:

  1. Only halal ingredients (raw materials) are used.
  2. The factory is audited and approved by an Islamic halal authorisation body.

Why are some of Cow & Gate powders or liquids halal approved and others are not?

Whether our products are halal certified depends largely upon the factory in which they were made.

Most of our recipes do not contain haram ingredients or processing steps. However, some of our factories have not yet been halal approved. This doesn't mean that the recipes are unsuitable for a halal diet, but they have not been certified by an external authorisation body.

For example, our Cow & Gate First Milk 800g is produced in a factory which has been halal approved, whereas our Cow & Gate Toddler milk from 1 year 200ml ready to drink carton is produced in a different factory which has not yet been approved or visited by an Islamic halal authorisation body.

You’ll find the full list of halal approved products above, but if you have any more questions, just contact us and we’ll be happy to help.
